The Azorean walking trail network has blossomed since the first waymarked trails were created by Dutch naturalist Gerbrand Michielsen over twenty years ago. For anyone thinking of hiking in the Azores, the incredibly varied landscapes across these volcanic islands offer some of the best walking trails in Europe.
With the assistance of our friends at the Associacao de Turismo, we’ve put together online walking guides and live route maps for our favourite routes across all nine islands of the Azores.
To access our online GPS walking routes, you’ll need to install the Footpath app. It’s an excellent navigation tool which you can install and use for free. Here’s how to setup and make best use of the app, and if you have any problems with the setup, please don’t hesitate to get in touch:
- Download the Footpath app to your smartphone for free at https://footpathapp.com/.
- When prompted, allow the app to access your phone’s location services.
- You’ll also need location services turned on when you’re ready to begin walking.
- Pick your island from the list below and you’ll see a full list of our favourite routes.
- To access your chosen route, click on the appropriate Footpath route map link.
- The Footpath app should launch automatically, with the app showing your current location.
