Overview

Relax and explore one of our favourite Azores islands on our Terceira family holiday.

Our seven night holiday will show you the best the island has to offer – including whale and dolphin watching from Angra Marina, kayaking in Praia da Vitoria bay, cycling in the Achada Valley, and guided walking through the island’s volcanic interior. Our resident guides Tiago and Isabel are proud of their island home and they’ll give you a fascinating insight into the landscapes, plants, animals, and history of Terceira. We’ll also include a hire car during your stay to allow you to explore the island, and we’ll fill you up with our favourite suggested things to see and do.

Your accommodation at Pico da Vigia  in on the rural south coast, with the bustling capital Angra de Heroismo just a short drive away. It’s a lovely, family friendly spot and owners Sofia and Bruno are two of the best hosts – always there when you need them and invisible when you don’t. Flying into the island: there are direct flights from Stansted each Wednesday throughout the summer, direct flights from Boston and Toronto, and daily flights from Lisbon. Terceira’s also very well connected to the other islands of the archipelago, so it’s a good option if you’re looking to combine a couple of islands into a two week stay – just fill in an enquiry form and we’ll give you a call for chat.

Itinerary

Fly from Heathrow, via Lisbon, to the island of Terceira. You’ll be met on arrival by Bruno, the owner of Pico da Vigia. Once you’ve collected your hire car, you’ll follow Bruno to your accommodation. A traditional Alcatra slow-cooked beef stew will be waiting in your cottage’s wood-burning oven when you arrive - you’ll also have a well-stocked fridge with everything you’ll need for breakfast.
This morning, you might like to drive into nearby Angra de Heroismo; capital of the island and the main town on the island. Angra's a good spot to shop for any supplies you might need during your stay - there's an excellent selection of shops selling local, seasonal produce, and a couple of larger supermarkets. In the afternoon, you'll head down to Angra marina - your stepping-off point for a three-hour whale and dolphin watching trip.
You'll spend today with our guide, exploring the Achada valley. It's a patchworked landscape of farms and fields, divided by lavastone walls and hedgerows - so we call the this our 'Patchwork bike ride'. It's easy terrain and the roads are really quiet, which make it a nice family ride (distance: 12km, approximate cycling time: 3 to 3.5 hours, grade: easy).
You'll be free to do your own thing today. One of our favourite places to spend time on Terceira is at Biscoitos on the north coast, where natural pools and coves provide easy access to the sea. In the afternoon, you could head inland to visit the volcanic cave Algar do Carvao. It's quite unique in the way it was formed, by two major eruptions 1000 years apart.
You’ll spend a second day with our resident guide, walking the Last Eruption Trail (distance: 6km, approximate walking time: 2.5 to 3 hours, grade: easy). Terceira’s landscape is a real mish-mash of landscapes, formed by overlapping eruptions which were separated by 1000s of years. Our guide will show you the landscapes created by the last major eruption on the island, in 1761.
Today's another free day - you might like to walk from Angra’s marina through Relvão Park and up to the summit point at Pico do Facho (250m). There’s a wonderful view of Angra from the summit, and the two bays on either side: Baia de Angra and Baia do Fanal (distance: 3.5km, approximate walking time: 2.5 hours, grade: easy to moderate).
For your final day on the island, you'll spend the morning with our guide and instructor, sea kayaking in Praia da Vitoria bay - a perfect spot for beginners and younger children to get to grips with a kayak. Once you’re back on dry land, you could spend the afternoon exploring Praia itself – Terceira’s ‘second city’ and the site of the very first settlement on the island (in the 1450s).
You'll return your hire car to the airport before flying home.
