Overview

Unwind in the backwoods of the third island on our Terceira Ecolodge Holiday.

Perhaps more famous for its protected ecosystems and historic architecture, the island of Terceira is also an excellent destination for anyone looking to relax, surrounded by the pleasantly laid-back pace of Azorean life.

You’ll be staying on the peaceful north coast of the island at the Caparica Azores Ecolodges – a recent and welcome addition to Terceira’s range of self-catering accommodation. For couples, a one-bedroom ensuite ecolodge is the perfect woodland hideaway. For families of up to six, you might prefer a stay in Caparica’s lavastone main house, with its garden and easy access to the shared outdoor pool.

If you love spending time in and around the sea, you’ll have a chance embrace island life: we’ll include a whale and dolphin watching trip, a sea-kayaking session, and snorkelling and coasteering trips. We’ll also include a hire car so you can explore the island’s volcanic landscapes, including the extraordinary caves at Algar do Carvao. You’ll also visit the island’s capital Angra de Heroismo: famous for its UNESCO-protected architecture, dating back to Portugal’s golden Age of Discoveries.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday with a flight via Lisbon to the island of Terceira. You’ll collect a hire car on arrival, before driving to your accommodation at the Caparica Ecolodge (a twenty-five minute drive). Once you’re settled into your lodge, you might like to head into nearby Biscoitos for an afternoon swim in the village’s famous seawater swimming pools.
For your first full day on Terceira, you’ll head to the island’s historic capital Angra de Herosimo for a whale and dolphin watching trip. The seas around the Azores are one of the best places to observe Atlantic-spotted dolphins and sperm whales.
You’ll visit the east coast town of Praia da Vitoria for a sea kayaking session. The calm waters of Praia’s protected bay are perfect for beginners, and more adventurous options are available for experienced kayakers.
You’ll take a boat trip to Ilheus das Cabras island – famous for the distinctive crack that’s gradually splitting the island into two. You’ll learn more about its geology and the local legends surrounding the island.
You’ll visit the Museu do Vinho where you’ll learn all about winemaking in the Azores, followed by a visit one of Terceira's less well-known swimming spots at Quatro Ribeiras.
You’ll return to Angra marina for a snorkelling trip – depending on the time of year, you’ll most likely see loggerhead turtles, barracudas, parrot fish, Mediterranean slipper lobsters, sea stars and groupers.
For your final full day on the island, you’ll return to Praia for a guided coasteering session. In the afternoon, you’ll visit the famous volcanic caves at Algar do Carvao – one of the Azores most-fascinating natural monuments.
You'll return your hire car to the airport before flying home.
