Overview

Our Sao Miguel, Sao Jorge and Terceira island hopping holiday combines three of the most popular Azorean islands into the perfect two-week trip.

Your holiday begins on the main island of Sao Miguel – the gateway to the Azores and home to the Azorean capital Ponta Delgada. You’ll have a chance to explore the extraordinary beauty of the great crater at Sete Cidades and the hot springs of the Furnas valley – Sao Miguel is also one of the best European destinations for whale and dolphin watching.

Your next stop is the island of Sao Jorge – often overlooked by visitors to the Azores, this relaxing rural island is famous for it’s dramatic coastlines and heavenly wild swimming spots. Your final destination is Terceira and the Azores’ oldest city Angra, whose cobbled streets, historic architecture and friendly population give Terceira an alluring charm. You’ll also visit the Parque Natural da Terceira and one of the islands’ most remarkable natural monuments: the volcanic caves at Algar do Carvao.

Itinerary

Day 1

You’ll begin your holiday by flying direct from Stansted to the Azores. You’ll be collected on arrival by our driver for your transfer into Ponta Delgada. For your first evening, there’s an excellent selection of restaurants and cafe bars within easy walking distance of your hotel – we’ll provide you with our handy online guide to eating out in Ponta Delgada.

Day 2

You'll head to sea for a whale and dolphin watching trip. The seas around the Azores are one of the best places to observe Atlantic-spotted dolphins and sperm whales.

Day 3

We’ll supply you with a hire car - you might like to head west to explore the great crater at Sete Cidades - the largest caldera on Sao Miguel – followed by a swim in the sea at Ponta Ferraria, where the pools are naturally heated by underwater vents.

Day 4

You might like to walk the levada trail – from the beach at Praia de Alto d’Agua to Lagoa do Fogo: the Lake of Fire. Lagoa do Fogo sits in the youngest of Sao Miguel’s volcanoes and it’s last eruption was in 1563.

Day 5

You could take a drive over the Pico da Barrosa pass (947m), for a swim in the 30˚C hot waterfall at Caldera Velha and visit the Gorreana tea plantation, Europe's oldest producer of tea (established in 1883).

Day 6

You’ll return your hire car to the airport, before flying to the island of Sao Jorge. Once you’re settled into your new hotel, you might like to walk up to the miradouro (viewpoint) on the summit of Morro Grande – the remnants of an extinct volcano at the western end of Velas, followed by a swim at the Zona Balnear da Preguica – one of the best swimming spots in the town.

Day 7

You’ll explore Sao Jorge with our resident guide – including visits to Ponta dos Rosais, the Parque Florestal das Sete Fontes, the pools at Fajã do Ouvidor, the coffee house at Faja dos Vimes, the Urzelina tower and Sao Jorge’s famous cheese factory.

Day 8

You might like to explore Sao Jorge’s famous fajas and seacliffs, either on foot via a guided or self guided walk, or from the ocean on a guided kayaking trip.

Day 9

You’ll be transferred to the airport for your flight to the island of Terceira. You’ll be collected on arrival by our driver for your transfer into historic Angra de Heroismo.

Day 10

You’ll explore Terceira with our guides - with visits to the miradouro at Serra do Cume, Praia da Vitoria, Biscoitos, and the famous lava cave of Algar do Carvao.

Day 11

You might like to explore the volcanic Misterio dos Negros on foot, or the lheus das Cabras by boat.

Day 12

You’ll be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Sao Miguel. Our driver will collect you on arrival once again, for your transfer to Furnas - the most easterly volcano on Sao Miguel with over thirty hot springs and geysers dotted around the valley.

Day 13

You’ll explore Furnas on foot, beginning with your hotel’s 200-year-old Terra Nostra botanical gardens - home to the town’s most famous geothermal swimming pool, which is floodlit in the evenings for the exclusive use of guests.

Day 14

You’ll walk the Furnas Lake trail – from the cozido cooking holes to the geothermal infinity pools at Poca Dona Beija.

Day 15

You'll be transferred to the airport for your flight home.
