If you want to immerse yourself in whale watching culture, the hotel Whalecome ao Pico is the place to stay.

Located on the harbour in the whaling town of Lajes do Pico, Whalecome is home to the longest established whale watching company in the Azores. When whale hunting ended in the late eighties, the men who (for generations) had manned the island’s ‘Vigia’ whaling lookouts, directing the boats and hunters out at sea were left unemployed. Whalecome owner Serge Viallelle saw a new future for the island’s spotters; combining their skills and experience with his own passion for marine conservation, Serge demonstrated that whale tourism was the sustainable way forwards.

There are eleven en-suite rooms decorated with a mixture of old and new styles. Most of the rooms have a sea view over the fishing harbour, and there’s a friendly bar and restaurant on the ground floor where guests gather in the evenings to chat through their days at sea
