Pousada Sao Sebastiao was opened as a hotel in 2006, this stunning 16th century fortress has been cleverly converted, maintaining a functional military feel in the new building and a cosy old world charm in the old building.
With an unrivalled position overlooking the bay of Angra and just a few minutes walk (downhill) into the centre of this World Heritage town, this has to be the place to stay in Angra. You enter through the original small and austere opening in the fortress wall into a welcoming reception and a lawned area with swimming pool and loungers and magnificent ocean views.
Pousada Sao Sebastiao has 29 rooms (9 double, 10 twin and 1 suite) divided between superior and standard. Standard rooms are on the ground floor while superior rooms are on the first floor with sea views (and balconies in the new building). All rooms are ensuite and have heating, air conditioning, safe, WiFi, minibar, hairdryer, telephone, and cable LCD TV. There is also a room for guests with limited mobility.
Other facilities include a small outdoor freshwater swimming pool (not heated), bar and restaurant (seats 62).
One of the highlights of staying at Pousada Sao Sebastiao are the ramparts which are mostly intact and you can walk around them and enter the two dome covered stone watchtowers – makes for a lovely walk at sunset!
Pousada Sao Sebastiao is in a great location above the centre of Angra on Terceira island but just a few minutes walk down in the town and its pretty harbour. See below for more information on Terceira island.
Whale watching and swimming with dolphins trips start from the marina just below Pousada Sao Sebastiao. For other activities, we can arrange for you to be collected or you could hire a car and explore this stunning island on your own.
