Overview

Explore Sao Miguel’s magnificent calderas, crater lakes and hot springs on our seven night Volcanoes of the Azores holiday.

If you’ve ever visited our office here in the Lake District, you’ll know we live in amongst some of the most beautiful peaks and mountains in the UK. But geologically they’re old, and 400 million years of erosion has taken it’s toll. The Azores’ islands are babies by comparison, and their volcanoes haven’t eroded away. Nor are they extinct: as you’ll also discover during your time with our resident guide, they’re merely dormant. The famous hot springs at Furnas owe their existence to the volcanic activity under your feet – and you’ll have plenty of time for a swim at the Parque Terra Nostra.

This is a great way to explore the island; the people of Sao Miguel are friendly and welcoming, the food is fantastic and the scenery is extraordinary.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday by flying to the Azores - direct or via Lisbon. You’ll be transferred by our driver to your accommodation in the island's capital: Ponta Delgada.
For your first full day on the island, you’ll head to western end of Sao Miguel to explore the great crater at Sete Cidades, the twin lakes of Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, the Ilhéus dos Mosteiros sea stacks and the hot seapools at Ferraria.
We'll leave today free, so you can relax and explore the narrow cobbled streets and mosaic pavements of Ponta Delgada.
You’ll spend today exploring the famous hot springs and geysers of the Furnas valley.
You'll explore on foot today, with a guided walk up to Lagoa do Fogo - the Lake of Fire - whose caldera last erupted in 1563. The lava flow stretched 6km down the northern flanks of the mountain - through present-day Ribeira Seca and on into the sea.
We'll leave today free - you might like to add a whale and dolphin watching trip to your holiday.
For your final full day on the island, you’ll head up into the central mountains of the Serra de Água d' Pau volcano - to the summit of Pico da Barrosa (947m), one of the highest points on the island, to Congro Lake, and to the Gruta do Carvão lava tunnels.
You’ll be transferred to the airport for your flight home.
