Overview

Explore two of the Azores’ most beautiful islands on our Terceira and Sao Jorge guided walking holiday.

The island of Terceira is famous for its cultural festivals, traditional cuisine and UNESCO-protected architecture. Less well-known are its fascinating volcanic landscapes, formed by centuries of overlapping eruptions and tectonic shifts.

Our resident walking guides Tiago and Isabel are experts on the island’s geological history. They’ll show you the vast underground fissures which formed Terceira and ancient lava flows which are gradually being reclaimed by the island’s plants and animals. You’ll see where the land has been tamed, and often lost, by the island’s human residents – from the magma domes of the Misterios Negros to the untenanted vineyards of Biscoitos: the remnants of Terceira’s once-flourishing wine industry.

You’ll find a very different landscape awaits you on Sao Jorge. Dina and Jorge will take you from the high rolling hills of Pico da Esperanca, via spectacular volcanic sea cliffs, down to the island’s famous fajas: the coastal plateaus which are home to Sao Jorge’s charming seafront villages.

The walks we’ve suggested for our Terceira & Sao Jorge guided walking holiday are graded as moderate to hard and are aimed more towards experienced walkers. If you prefer less-intense walks, it’s easy for us to include some great alternatives on both islands – just fill out one of our enquiry forms and we’ll call you for a chat.
