Overview
Explore two of the Azores’ most beautiful islands on our Terceira & Sao Jorge guided walking holiday.
The island of Terceira is famed for it’s cultural festivals and it’s UNESCO-protected architecture. Less well-known are it’s fascinating volcanic landscapes, formed by centuries of overlapping eruptions. You’ll explore this protected nature reserve with our guides Tiago and Isabel – they’ll lead you through island’s geological history, following the Rocha do Chambre trail and ancient lava flows which are gradually being claimed by the island’s plants and animals. You’ll also see where the land has been tamed (and sometimes lost) by the island’s human residents – hiking through the untenanted vineyards of Biscoitos: the remnants of Terceira’s once-flourishing wine industry.
You’ll find a very different landscape awaits you on Sao Jorge. Our guides Dina and Jorge will take you from the high rolling hills of Pico da Esperanca (1053m), via spectacular volcanic sea cliffs, down to the island’s famous fajas: the coastal plateaus which are home to the island’s charming white-washed villages.
The four walks we’ve suggested for our Terceira & Sao Jorge guided walking holiday are graded as moderate to hard, and are aimed more towards experienced walkers. If you prefer less-intense walks, it’s easy for us to include some great alternatives on both islands – just fill out one of our enquiry forms and we’ll call you for a chat.
