Overview

We’ve spent the Summer getting re-acquainted with an old friend – the island of Terceira.

Whereas Sao Miguel sometimes steals the spotlight, we think Terceira’s going to be a great option for a family holiday in 2018. The island has the same great mix of activities and accommodation, but without the tourist crowds that are increasingly a feature on the main island in the Summer months. With that in mind, we’ve put together our Terceira Family Retreat; a  seven night stay which includes four of our favourite family activities:

 – a half-day Whale and Dolphin watching trip.

 – a half-day kayak in Praia da Vitoria bay– great for beginners and children, in the company of our instructor.

 – a half-day guided family bike ride around the Achada Valley – the island’s eastern plain (so the climbs are kept to a minimum).

 – a half-day guided walk through the island’s volcanic interior.

Whichever one of our resident guides you spend your days with – whether it’s Tiago, Isabel or Sophie – they’re all (quite rightly) very proud of their island home, and they’ll give you a fascinating insight into the landscapes, plants, animals, and history of Terceira. We’ll also include a hire car during your stay to allow you to explore the island, and we’ll fill you up with our favourite suggested things to see and do.

Your accommodation at Pico da Vigia is arguably one of the nicest cottages on any of the islands – such a peaceful, pleasant part of the island to be in, down on the rural south coast with the bustling capital Angra de Heroismo just a short drive away. It’s a lovely, family friendly spot for when you’re not out and about on those activity days, and owners Sofia and Bruno are two of the best hosts – always there when you need them and invisible when you don’t.

Flying into the island: there are daily flights from Lisbon and it’s usually quite easy to fly there in a single day from the UK. Terceira’s also very well connected to the other islands of the archipelago, so it’s a good option if you’re looking to combine a couple of islands into a two week stay – our new Graciosa Family Holiday would make a great second week.

Itinerary

Fly from Heathrow, via Lisbon, to the island of Terceira. You’ll be met on arrival by Bruno, the owner of Pico da Vigia. Once you’ve collected your hire car, you’ll follow Bruno to your accommodation. A traditional Alcatra slow-cooked beef stew will be waiting in your cottage’s wood-burning oven when you arrive - you’ll also have a well-stocked fridge with everything you’ll need for breakfast.
This morning, you might like to drive into nearby Angra de Heroismo; capital of the island and the main town on the island. Angra's a good spot to shop for any supplies you might need during your stay - there's an excellent selection of shops selling local, seasonal produce, and a couple of larger supermarkets. In the afternoon, you'll head down to Angra marina - your stepping-off point for a three-hour whale and dolphin watching trip.
You'll spend today with our guide, exploring the Achada valley. It's a patchworked landscape of farms and fields, divided by lavastone walls and hedgerows - so we call the this our 'Patchwork bike ride'. It's easy terrain and the roads are really quiet, which make it a nice family ride (distance: 12km, approximate cycling time: 3 to 3.5 hours, grade: easy).
You'll be free to do your own thing today. One of our favourite places to spend time on Terceira is at Biscoitos on the north coast, where natural pools and coves provide easy access to the sea. In the afternoon, you could head inland to visit the volcanic cave Algar do Carvao. It's quite unique in the way it was formed, by two major eruptions 1000 years apart.
You’ll spend a second day with our resident guide, walking the Last Eruption Trail (distance: 6km, approximate walking time: 2.5 to 3 hours, grade: easy). Terceira’s landscape is a real mish-mash of landscapes, formed by overlapping eruptions which were separated by 1000s of years. Our guide will show you the landscapes created by the last major eruption on the island, in 1761.
Today's another free day - you might like to walk from Angra’s marina through Relvão Park and up to the summit point at Pico do Facho (250m). There’s a wonderful view of Angra from the summit, and the two bays on either side: Baia de Angra and Baia do Fanal (distance: 3.5km, approximate walking time: 2.5 hours, grade: easy to moderate).
For your final day on the island, you'll spend the morning with our guide and instructor, sea kayaking in Praia da Vitoria bay - a perfect spot for beginners and younger children to get to grips with a kayak. Once you’re back on dry land, you could spend the afternoon exploring Praia itself – Terceira’s ‘second city’ and the site of the very first settlement on the island (in the 1450s).
You'll return your hire car to the airport before flying home.
