The itinerary of this popular Self-guided walking holiday on São Miguel takes you through some of the most stunning scenery in the Azores and you will have two bases; Ponta Delgada and Furnas. You will have a hire car for the week and planned circular walk routes giving you complete freedom during your stay. Detailed route maps and instructions are provided so you can explore São Miguel at your leisure.
Your walks vary from 3km to 12km (2 to 4½ hours) and allow you to explore the impressive Sete Cidades crater with its twin lakes in the west of the island and the boiling Furnas Lake in the central highlands. There is also a stunning walk down from the Fire Lake, the Azores’ wildest crater lake, and a pretty walk along the south coast.
Please note that this self guided walking holiday can also be done with transfers instead of a hire car and walks will then be linear but cover similar areas of the island.
Furnas Lake Walk - Length : 9km. Approximate walking time : 2½ - 3 hours. Grading : Easy. Today you can take a walk straight from your hotel to Furnas Lake and then around it stopping to see the cooking holes where locals lower casseroles into holes in the ground to be cooked by the volcanic heat. This pretty walk follows the road up to the lake and then a path around the wooded lake edge lush with Himalayan Ginger and plane and eucalyptus trees.
Sanguinho walk - Length : 7km. Approximate walking time : 2-3 hours. Grading : Easy. A beautiful walk down through the Cryptomeria forest passing an abandoned watermill and waterfalls, crossing pretty bridges, and passing through an abandoned village on the South East coast.
Ribeira Quente to Povoacao walk - Length : 8km. Approximate walking time : 3 hours. Grading : Moderate. Today you leave your car at the fishing village of Ribeira Quente with its sandy beach and pretty port. From here you take the undulating coastal path offering some wonderful views out across the Atlantic. The walk ends at Povoacao (meaning 'settlement') where the first settlers landed in 1432. This remote town is a great place to end your walk with a sandy beach (why not go for a swim!) and lots of good cafes serving delicious Azorean pastries including 'Fofa', a giant chocolate eclair!
Please note this walk requires a transfer back to the start once you have left your car at Ribeira Quente (around €15). There is a taxi rank in Povoacao so is easily arranged when you arrive there.
Fire Lake Walk - Length : 12km. Approximate walking time : 4½ - 5 hours. Grading : Moderate. This walk follows a good path and then a watercourse from 10m up to the Fire Lake at 600m, walking through the lovely wooded valleys. This is probably the most impressive and ‘wild’ crater lake of all the islands. The walk then continues down to the coast along a farm track ending at a sandy beach where you can take a swim and refresh yourself!
Sete Cidades Walk - Length : 10km. Approximate walking time : 3½ - 4 hours. Grading : Moderate. Sete Cidades (Seven Cities) is the village that lies inside this now dormant crater. The crater itself is the largest in the Azores measuring 5km across and 15 km in circumference. The rim lies at 700m and is covered in lush vegetation; Himalayan ginger, blue hydrangea hedges and green dairy meadows. The path contours half the crater rim giving wonderful views down towards the mystical blue and green lakes inside and over the deep blue Atlantic on the other side. The walk then descends into the village of Sete Cidades on the shores of the two lakes.
