On this self guided walking holiday, you’ll be based in Horta on Faial, Madalena on Pico and Velas on São Jorge. Our friendly drivers will drop you off at the start of each walk and pick you up later that day at a prearranged time and place. We’ll provide you with detailed route maps and instructions so you can explore at your leisure.
These three central islands offer some of the best walking in the Azores including the stunning fajã walk on São Jorge, a walk around the crater on Faial and a visit to the 1957 eruption site at Capelinhos. There is a regular ferry service between the islands so you will be using it to island hop which adds to the sense of exploration.
Caldeira Walk and visit to Capelinhos - Length : 10km. Approximate walking time : 3½ hours. Grading : Moderate.
A pretty walk around half of the crater rim in the centre of the island and then along a levada (water channel) shaded by hydrangea hedgerows. You will be collected from your hotel and transferred to the caldeira in the centre of the island to start your walk. At the end of the walk you will be met and taken to visit Capelinhos, site of a large volcanic eruption in the late 1950s. Please note that this day out does not include a visit to the interpretation centre at Capelinhos but it can be added (you need to allow about 2hrs to visit the centre, entrance is €10 per person and there will be additional transfer costs).
Ferry to Pico (30 mins - €4 per person payable locally).
Frei Matias walk - Length : 10km. Approximate walking time - 3½ hours. Grading : Easy.
The most obviously volcanic of all the nine islands, Pico is dominated by its volcanic cone of Pico Alto (2351m), the highest point in Portugal. You will be collected from your hotel and taken up to the lava tube cave of Frei Matias on the slopes of Pico Alto. Starting from here you begin a very pretty walk downhill along farm tracks and through a delightful forest garden back to your hotel.
Overnight Hotel Caravelas in Madalena for 1 night.
Three Fajã Walk. Length : 11km. Approximate walking time : 4½ hours. Grading : Moderate.
Most of São Jorge’s population is concentrated along the numerous island ‘fajãs’ - the small coastal plains created by the erosion of the steep cliff sides. This walk begins at the top of the island and descends down 700m to sea level through some of the archipelago’s most beautiful scenery. The hydrangea lined path takes you through ‘forests’ of tree heather and pasture down to the Fajã do Santo Cristo where ‘clams’ are farmed in its sweetwater lagoon. The undulating path continues through two more fajãs ending at Fajã dos Cubres.
Spine Walk. Length : 14km. Approximate walking time : 5 hours. Grading : Moderate.
This high level walk follows the spine of the island circling between the green crater peaks (including the islands highest, Pico da Esperança) descending down to a small village on a fajã on the north coast where it’s possible to take a refreshing dip in the sea! On a clear day, there are spectacular views down to both sides of the island from your vantage point.
Ferry to Faial (75 mins - €15 per person payable locally).
Overnight Faial Hotel in Horta.
