Overview

The ‘Ilhas Triangulos’ are a triangle of islands in the centre of the Azores archipelago – and our Faial, Sao Jorge and Pico self-guided walking holiday is the best way to explore all three islands on foot.

Your holiday begins on the small island of Faial, where you’ll explore the grand Cabeco Gordo caldera, the extinct Monte da Guia volcano, and one of the Azores’ most arresting volcanic landscapes: Capelinhos, where a cataclysmic eruption created a vast swath of new land in the 1950s.

A ferry ride from Faial brings you to the island of Sao Jorge, whose coastal walks and wild swimming spots are only just being discovered by visitors to the islands. They’ve been firm favourites for Azoreans for countless years.

It’s another short hop by ferry to the island of Pico – famous for it’s UNESCO-protected vineyards and the visually striking Montanha do Pico: an immense 2351m stratovolcano which presents a challenging ascent for even the most-dedicated of walkers.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday by flying from the UK to the Azores, via Lisbon. You’ll be collected on arrival by our driver for your transfer into Horta. Horta is a popular stop-over point for trans-Atlantic yachts which gives the town a friendly, cosmopolitan atmosphere.
You'll explore Horta on foot with visits to Peter Café Sport, the Torre do Relogio clock tower and the Museu da Horta. After lunch, you’ll walk up to summit of the extinct Monte da Guia volcano.
You’ll walk the PR6 Dez Vulcoes trail - from Cabeço Gordo caldeira in the centre of the island to Capelinhos: the site of a major volcanic eruption which lasted 13 months from September 1957 to October 1958.
You’ll head up to the north coast of the island to walk the PRC02 Rocha da Faja trail down to the Baia da Ribeira das Cabras.
You’ll take the morning ferry to the island of Sao Jorge, where you'll be collected by our driver for the short transfer to your new hotel. In the afternoon, you might like to walk up to the miradouro (viewpoint) on the summit of Morro Grande – the remnants of an extinct volcano at the western end of Velas.
You’ll walk the PR4 trail from Pico do Pedro down to Faja do Ouvidor on the north coast - home to one of the best natural swimming pools in the Azores: the Piscina Natural Simao Dias.
Your second walk will take you from the Serra do Topo down the PR02 to Faja dos Vimes. The village is home to the Café Nunes, where the Nunes family cultivate their own coffee beans.
You’ll take the ferry over to the island of Pico - our driver will transfer you to your new accommodation in rural Silveira.
You might like to include a guided ascent of Mount Pico – Portugal’s highest peak at 2,351m. Although the walk begins at 1,200m, the difficulty of the day is not to be underestimated. If you’d prefer a more-moderate self-guided walk, we can recommend some of our favourite coastal walks on the island.
You’ll begin today with a visit to the lava cave at Gruta das Torres, followed by a walk along the Mistérios do Sul do Pico trail.
You’ll be transferred to the airport for your flights home, (via Lisbon).
