Overview

March Special Offer – Seven nights on Sao Miguel £940pp

March is one of our favourite months on Sao Miguel – as winter fades and the balmy seas and blue skies return, you can feel the whole island spring back to life. March also offers the added quiet and calm of visiting the Azores outside of the busy summer months, although you couldn’t ever accuse the south coast village of Caloura of being busy. Seclusion and tranquillity have always been Caloura’s appeal – something the boutique hotel Quinta do Mar offers in spades.

Our March Special Offer is based around a seven night stay at this charming Quinta, with direct flights from Stansted to Sao Miguel, a private airport transfer and a hire car so you can explore the island’s outstanding natural beauty. You’ll spend time at sea with the resident whales and dolphins, followed by a day on inland waters – kayaking in the great crater at Sete Cidades. You’ll also have your pick of our favourite guided adventures: choose from a full-day guided hike exploring Sao Miguel’s best walking trails, coasteering on the volcanic Cerco peninsula, canyoning down the Ribeira dos Caldeiroes river valley, or horse riding through the Acacias woodlands of Mata Santa.

And no visit to Sao Miguel is complete without a day in the beautiful Furnas valley – unwinding in the hot springs and geothermal pools of the famous Parque Terra Nostra.

Itinerary

You'll begin your holiday with a direct flight from Stansted to Sao Miguel. You’ll be collected on arrival by our driver for your transfer to Quinta do Mar.
We’ll deliver your hire car, and you’ll head to the nearby town of Vila Franca for a whale and dolphin watching trip. The seas around the Azores are one of the best places to observe bottlenose dolphins and sperm whales.
You’ll spend today exploring the capital of the Azores: Ponta Delgada. With its narrow streets and mosaic pavements, it's a nicely-compact city which is easy to explore on foot. Ponta Delgada’s also home to many of our favourite restaurants, serving some of the best Azorean cuisine.
You’ll pick your own adventure for today from our list of favourites: a full-day hike with our resident guide, coasteering in Caloura, canyoning at the Ribeira dos Caldeiroes Natural Park, or horse riding in the woodlands of Mata Santa.
You’ll head west today to explore the great crater at Sete Cidades by kayak and by bike. Sete Cidades (or Seven Cities) is the largest caldera on the island: 5km across and 15km in circumference - its rim lies at 700m and is covered in a forest of Japanese cedar and hydrangeas.
You'll take a drive into the central mountains of the Agua de Pau volcano - up to the summit of Pico da Barrosa (947m), via the famous viewpoint overlooking Lagoa do Fogo (the ‘Lake of Fire’), the geothermal pools at Caldera Velha, and the Gorreana tea plantation.
For your final full day on the island, you’ll drive east to explore the beautiful Furnas valley, including visits to the cozido cooking holes, the geysers at Chã das Caldeiras, and the 200-year-old Terra Nostra botanical gardens - home to the town’s most famous geothermal swimming pool.
You’ll return your hire car to the airport before flying home.
