Overview

Diving in the Azores has the advantage of the mix of the subtropical climate and the Gulf stream waters, which accommodates a diverse range of marine species. During your diving holiday on São Miguel, you will frequently see schools of mackerel, barracudas, yellow-fin tuna and trigger fish. Common sting rays grow to enormous size in these waters. Even large mantas are sometimes encountered during our underwater mountains trips. Small sea creatures such as sea spiders, sea urchins, tube worms, octopus, moray eels and lobsters hide in the small underwater formations. Night dives during the diving holiday on São Miguel are particularly spectacular since the luminescent plankton can provide an eerie glow at certain times of the year. Shrimp in huge swarms provide rainbow colours as do nudibranchs and anemones. The visibility is almost always good with up to 60m on a good day.

The largest island of the archipelago, São Miguel offers over 30 dive spots with caves, grottos as well as walls, flats and seamounts close to the island. One of our favourites is the beautiful islet of Vila Franca do Campo; an ancient volcanic crater just 2 miles offshore. There is a lagoon inside which you can enter as part of the crater wall has collapsed due to marine erosion and tectonic movement. The dive is 20m deep with caves and the crater is also a breeding area for the Cory Shearwater. Other sites include the spectacular vertical rock islets off Mosteiros on the west coast and some easy dives accessible by land from the pretty port of Caloura on the south coast.

During your diving holiday on São Miguel, you will have 8 dives with a professional PADI operator in Vila Franca who we have worked with for many years. You will benefit from being in a small group – groups are kept to between one and five people and many of the guides on the diving holiday on São Miguel are marine biologists. Tanks and weights are included and all other equipment can be hired at an additional cost.

Please note : To maximise the safety of visitors, our boats do not go out in adverse conditions, so days and times of outings will naturally be dependent on prevailing weather conditions.
