Overview

This holiday pairs two hotels with a south facing view over the Atlantic ocean, in the centre and the east of São Miguel, so that you can explore the calderas and beaches of the green isle by day and enjoy Azorean sunsets each night.

The Caloura Hotel is only a 20 minute drive from the airport but it’ll feel like a world away when you arrive and check in to your sea view room. You can relax in the bar, restaurant or gardens above the ocean, or wander down to one of the best beaches on the island only a few minutes from your hotel.

Your hire car will be delivered to you on your first morning and this is yours for the whole week. Your time is your own to relax and explore the beautiful island at your own pace and the suggested week here is a mix of sightseeing, relaxing and exploring the island by car and on foot. The Caloura Hotel is ideally situated to explore the centre and west of São Miguel.

During the week you’ll move east to the Hotel do Mar in the coastal town of Povoação. You overlook the harbour of this, the first place the Portuguese settlers made landfall in 1427. It’s a short walk into town where you’ll find a selection of cafe-bars and restaurants. The east of the island is lesser visited and the Hotel do Mar is a great base from where to explore Faial da Terra and the Nordeste region.

This self-guided itinerary showcases the best of the coast and calderas of São Miguel.

Itinerary

Today you'll fly from London to São Miguel. You'll be met at the airport on arrival in the Azores and taken to your hotel for your first four nights, the Hotel Caloura set above the cliffs and beach of the Caloura peninsula.
This morning your hire car will be delivered to you at your hotel. This week you are free to explore the island at your own pace. Today you might like to drive to nearly Vila Franca do Campo, to explore the old capital of the island and to visit the marina and sandy beach. There's a great cafe set just back from the beach, and whale watching trips leave from the marina.
The island is ideal for exploring on foot and today you might like to drive to the famous western caldera of Sete Cidades. Here you can park on the crater rim and walk down into the caldera. The village by the blue and green lakes has options for lunch - and if you're feeling energetic you might like to hire a kayak to explore the lakes.
Today you might drive to Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores, to explore the pretty and friendly city. The streets hold various interesting shops, bars and restaurants and attractions such as the Museu Carlos Machado and Millitary Museum. The eastern harbour has a swimming area cordoned off should you wish to join the locals and tourists in the water.
During the day you might like to visit the spa town and caldera of Furnas, to explore the steaming waters and bubbling mud pools. We have a 2-3 hour self guided walk that you can follow up from the town and around the beautiful crater lake. This afternoon you'll check in to your second hotel in the eastern town of Povoação. Your second stay is in the Hotel do Mar, situated on the harbour front.
Povoação is ideally situated to access the east end of the island, lesser visited by tourists. The eastern tip of Nordeste is a very scenic 40 minute coastal driving tour away. There's a 3 hour circular walk that you can follow, with views out above the Atlantic ocean.
Today you might like to take a taxi to Ribeira Quente. The journey by taxi is some 17km but your return route will be much more direct - there's a delightful coast path walk of around 7km back to Povoação with ocean views all the way. (Taxi will be c.€15).
Today you'll check out of your hotel and return your hire car to the airport before flying from the Azores.

Two hotels-with-a-view on the south coast of the green isle.

Location

The coast of São Miguel is where luxuriant green vegetation and black volcanic rock meets white Atlantic waves and the ocean blue. São Miguel has a wild, rocky coast but the beaches that you'll seek out, dotted between the cliffs, are all the better for it.
