Overview

Combine the volcanic beaches of north and the rugged bays of the south on our Coasts and Sunsets of Sao Miguel holiday.

Your week begins in the north – it’s a short, fifteen-minute drive from the airport to the Hotel Verde Mar & Spa but it feels a world away from the island’s bustling capital, with its sweeping panoramic views of Sao Miguel’s northern coastline. The dark sands of Santa Barbara, the island’s most-popular surf beach, are close by, and it’s a short walk into the centre of Ribeira Grande – the largest town outside of Ponta Delgada.

We’ll deliver your hire car the following day so you can begin exploring the island’s spectacular landscapes, with visits to the great crater at Sete Cidades and the famous hot springs and botanical gardens in Furnas.

Switching to the south coast of Sao Miguel, you’ll end your week at the clifftop Caloura Resort Hotel in the quiet coastal village of Caloura – popular for its secluded Baixa d’Areia beach and its seafood restaurants. The nearby harbour town of Vila Franca do Campo is home to one of island’s best whale and dolphin watching crews if you’d like to include a trip to sea, and the Azorean capital Ponta Delgada, with its excellent selection of café bars and restaurants, is a short drive away.

Itinerary

Today you'll fly from London to São Miguel. You'll be met at the airport on arrival in the Azores and taken to your hotel for your first three nights, the Hotel Verde Mar & Spa on the north coast.
This morning your hire car will be delivered to you at your hotel. This week you are free to explore the island at your own pace. The island is ideal for exploring on foot and today you might like to drive to the famous western caldera of Sete Cidades. Here you can park on the crater rim and walk down into the caldera. The village by the blue and green lakes has options for lunch - and if you're feeling energetic you might like to hire a kayak to explore the lakes.
Today you might drive to Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores, to explore the pretty and friendly city. The streets hold various interesting shops, bars and restaurants and attractions such as the Museu Carlos Machado and Millitary Museum. The eastern harbour has a swimming area cordoned off should you wish to join the locals and tourists in the water.
You'll check out from your hotel and later on will check in to the Caloura Hotel Resort on the south coast. During the day you might like to visit Vila Franca do Campo, to explore the old capital of the island and to visit the marina and sandy beach. There's a great cafe set just back from the beach, and whale watching trips leave from the marina.
You might like a day relaxing and exploring Caloura. The peninsula has its own micro-climate, set below the main cliff level of the south of the island. There is a great beach at the west end where the white Atlantic waves meet the black volcanic Azorean rocks. Two kilometers away on the eastern side of the peninsula there is a small harbour from where you can snorkel. The best fish restaurant on the island (Bar Caloura) is situated just above the harbour and it’s worth getting there early to get a table early as they don’t take reservations.
The spa town and caldera of Furnas is a must-visit. Here there's the famous thermal pools, steaming waters and bubbling mud pools. We have a 2-3 hour self guided walk that you can follow up from the town and around the beautiful crater lake.
The eastern tip of Nordeste is a very scenic coastal driving tour away. There's a 3 hour circular walk that you can follow, with views out above the Atlantic ocean. Return via the towns of Faial da Terra and Povoacao - and a second visit to the thermal pools in Furnas!
Today you'll check out of your hotel and return your hire car to the airport before flying from the Azores.
