Flights to the Azores – How do I get to the Azores?

Flights to the Azores – How do I get to the Azores?

This is a question I get asked a great deal and have written two blogs on the subject. This one assumes you live in the UK and want to fly to the Azores; my second blog is titled ‘Getting to the Azores from the USA’.

However, the good news (for some) is that Ryanair also has a weekly direct flight from London, Stansted to Sao Miguel (the main Azores island). This flight departs Stansted every Saturday and takes 4 hours.  This flight has been successful for Ryanair and in 2020 they introduced 2 additional direct flights to the Azores.  The first of these is a second flight to the island of Sao Miguel on a Tuesday from June to October.  The other new flight is again from Stansted, but now to the island of Terceira on a Wednesday from April to October.

Ryanair flight schedule summary.

London Stansted to Sao Miguel: Saturdays throughout the year and Tuesdays from June to September

London Stansted to Terceira: Wednesdays from April to October

Cost: You might be surprised as the cost can start a below £100pp (return) in the winter to in excess of £700pp (return) in the summer.

TAP Air Portugal (via Lisbon or Porto)

Other popular flight options are with the Portuguese airline, TAP.

There are some big advantages to flying TAP.  Flights operate multiple times each day from Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester.  If visiting more than one island then you can often do an open jaw ticket, whereby you fly into one island and out of a different one. You can have planned stop overs in either Lisbon or Porto.  All flights via Lisbon with TAP involve a change of plane in either Lisbon or Porto.  This may feel like a big inconvenience when comparing with the Ryanair direct flights but if you’re looking for flexibility then they could be just the ticket!

TAP flight schedule summary:

Daily flights from London Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester via Lisbon and Porto

Open jaw tickets (islands you can fly into and out of; Sao Miguel, Terceira, Faial, Santa Maria and Pico)

Lisbon and Porto stopovers

Seat options include both economy and club

Costs: Vary from £290pp (return) to £800pp return

Until 2020, the Azores airline SATA International operated a direct flight from Gatwick to the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores.  Unfortunately, the last flight SATA operated was on in October 2019 and there are no plans to reinstate it.

Financial protection: If booking flights on their own then you don’t have any protection from the airline should they go bust.  However, booking a package holiday which includes flights from the UK with a reputable company like Archipelago Choice means your whole holiday is ATOL Protected

For over 20 years Archipelago Choice has been organising award-winning tailor-made holidays to the Azores islands and I think it’s fair to say that ‘nobody knows the Azores like the team at Archipelago Choice.

It’s free to chat and we’d love to hear from you.
