This is a question I get asked a great deal and have written two blogs on the subject. This one assumes you live in the USA and want to fly to the Azores.
FLIGHTS WITH THE AZORES AIRLINE, SATA
SATA AZORES AIRLINES, operate daily flights from Boston to the main island Sao Miguel. This flight route has proven to be very popular with Azorean ex-pats’ who live in the Boston area, but is also a great way for people looking for a European vacation. The flight departs Boston around 10pm and arrives around 6am (local time) the following morning, with a flying time of just over 4 hours. SATA also offer connections from many state capitals around the US, which can be booked on a through ticket.
It is also possible to fly from Boston to the island of Terceira.
If living on the west coast of the US it is possible, in the summer, (June to September) to fly from Oakland, California direct to Terceira. These flights are usually weekly and take around 11 hrs.
SATA flight schedule summary.
Boston to Sao Miguel: Daily from June to September. 6 times per week in April and May and 5 times a week from January to March and October to December.
Boston to Terceira: Once a week during the winter months (Wednesdays) from January to May and October to December. During the summer months it operates three times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturdays) from June through to September and three times a week, throughout the year
Oakland to Terceira: Once a week on a Monday, from June to August
Cost: You might be surprised as the cost can start below $550pp (round trip) in the winter to in excess of $1200pp (round trip) in the summer.
SATA flight to Madeira
Getting to Madeira has never been easier as SATA operate 4 flights a week from Ponta Delgada in the Azores to Funchal in Madeira . The flights are Fridays, Saturdays, Mondays and Tuesdays, which means it’s possible to fly from Boston to the Azores on the same trip.
TAP Air Portugal
Other possible flight options are with the Portuguese airline, TAP.
TAP is about to use the main airport on Sao Miguel island, Ponta Delgada, as a hub for flights to the US. This means you should be able to fly from certain US cities to Ponta Delgada and then on to Lisbon and Porto. This would make combining USA, Azores and Europe a very attractive option as it’s only 4+ hours from east coast airports to the Azores. If visiting more than one island then you can often do an open jaw ticket, whereby you fly into one island and out of a different one; have stopovers in the Azores, Lisbon or Porto before heading further into Europe using TAPs extensive European network.
TAP flight schedule summary:
Daily flights to the Azores from Lisbon and Porto
Open jaw tickets (islands you can fly into and out of; Sao Miguel, Terceira, Faial, Santa Maria and Pico)
Lisbon and Porto stopovers
Seat options include both economy and club
Costs: Vary from $550pp (round trip) to $1200pp (round trip)
FLIGHTS TO THE AZORES WITH DELTA
For a couple of years, Delta airlines flew a direct flight from New York to the main Azores island of Sao Miguel. Unfortunately, Delta ceased operating this flight towards the end of 2019 and there are no plans, at present, to reinstate it.
Financial protection: If booking flights on their own then you don’t have any protection from the airline should they go bust. However, booking a package holiday with a reputable company like Archipelago Choice means the money you pay for your holiday is protected by insurance in the unlikely event of our insolvency.
For over 20 years Archipelago Choice has been organising award-winning tailor-made holidays to the Azores islands and I think it’s fair to say that ‘nobody knows the Azores like the team at Archipelago Choice.
It’s free to chat and we’d love to hear from you.
Azores Choice provided a prompt, helpful service. they found us the perfect accommodation for our needs and provided superb, expert advice on how to spend our week walking on San Miguel. I would certainly use them again.
