Surfing soon becomes a way of life and this is certainly true for Josephine and Ricardo who run the Azores Surf Centre on the island of São Miguel. Their mission is a simple one; “to provide a friendly, personal and professional service for those who want to learn to surf or improve their surfing skills”. Their philosophy is one of respect for the ocean and the oceanic environment around the Azores.
The Azores is not well known at the moment as a destination for surfing, but with its year round mild climate and sea temperatures which average 15 to 22 degrees C, this could well change.
The centre is situated on Santa Barbara beach of north coast of Sao Miguel (close to Ribeira Grande) and during the summer months the ocean on this part of the island tends to offer consistent conditions for both beginners and the experienced. During the winter months beaches on the south coast tend to be used at they offer more protection from the larger winter swell.
All abilities can be catered for, but the minimum age for beginners is 7 years. All equipment can be provided, you just need to bring a bathing suit, towel and sunblock.
All instructors are the centre are certified by the Portuguese Federation of Surfing, International Surfing Association and the Academy of surfing Instructors.
