Overview
Solar dos Cantos is an elegant manor house, surrounded by one of Ponta Delgada’s most beautiful and historic gardens.
Solar dos Cantos is the former estate of Jose do Canto: a wealthy 19th-century landowner, intellectual, and passionate botanist who devoted much of his life to plants, books and agriculture. Beginning in 1845, he developed the garden here as a vast botanical experiment, establishing contacts with nurseries and botanical gardens around the world and importing thousands of species to acclimatise in the Azorean climate. He was instrumental in developing the cultivation of pineapple and tea on Sao Miguel, while camellias, cryptomerias and countless other exotic plants found their way into his gardens and estates across the island.
The garden has always been the real heart of the estate, and towering Australian figs, araucarias, camphor trees, magnolias form a dense canopy around the house, mixed with plants native to the Azores and Macaronesia. It was described by the German botanist Edmond Goeze as ‘…unquestionably the richest of all the private gardens we had a chance to visit in Europe…’, whilst Portuguese writer Raul Brandao marvelled at its almost other-worldly greenery, with ‘…trees that inspire respect – a piece of the tropics carried by magic to Ponta Delgada…’ At 1.5 hectares in size, the scale and variety of the plants are a reminder of Jose do Canto’s ambition, and the garden is now classified as a property of public interest.
The house itself has an intimate feel – there are just fifteen effortlessly stylish rooms, decorated with a well-chosen palette of natural shades and hues, which help connect the inside to the outside. Its location within the city also makes Solar dos Cantos particularly appealing: you’re just fifteen minutes on foot from Ponta Delgada’s historic centre, yet once inside the gates it feels more like a private country estate than a city hotel. After a day exploring Sao Miguel, you can return to the gardens, take a refreshing swim, and find a quiet corner beneath the trees. This isn’t simply a hotel with an attractive garden; it’s a remarkable example of Azorean botanical and cultural history, where the passion of one 19th century collector still shapes the landscape today.
