Pico Vineyards – Wine Boutique Hotel

Pico Vineyards is a peaceful retreat, combining contemporary design, Azorean wine, and Pico Island’s slower pace of life.

A new build hotel, Pico Vineyards opened its doors to public on 1^st July 2025 and the choice of location is no accident. The Paisagem da Cultura da Vinha is just to the north, and it’s one of Europe’s most remarkable wine growing landscapes. Vines are cultivated in small ‘currais’ plots, divided by thousands of drystone walls which shelter the plants from the winter winds. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s a striking example of how generations of islanders have work with, rather than against, Pico’s volcanic landscape.

With just eleven rooms and suites, Pico Vineyards has an intimate feel. The architecture is understated, using the same locally sourced basalt as the Paisagem da Cultura vineyards, and the exterior cryptomeria cladding is already gently silvering into its rural surroundings. ‘Standard’ vineyard rooms each have a small terrace – your own private currais – whilst suites come with a larger terrace and a plunge pool; there are also shared indoor and outdoor basalt pools, and a small wellness space.

Like Pico itself, wine is central to the character of the hotel. Curated tastings in the Pedra e Vinho cellar will introduce you to the winemaking traditions of the Azores, focusing on local grape varieties such as Arinto dos Acores, Verdelho, and Terrantez do Pico. There are also seasonal wine-pairing dinners and more intimate private tastings in the Alma da Gruta – a volcanic stone cave, where you can sample rare, fortified wines from Pico, paired with regional Azorean delicacies.
