Palheiro is owned by a lovely resident British couple, who arranged for this tiny but cosy studio apartment to be refurbished in 2007 by local craftsmen.
The cottage is in the main garden of the owners’ home but when they have guests staying they do not use the garden so it is effectively your own. Palheiro is centrally located in the village of Fajã Grande, it is close to a small shop, restaurants and the sea and from the front door there’s an uninterrupted view over the village to the islet of Monchique, Europe’s most westerly point.
Palheiro is open plan (20m²) comprising a sleeping and sitting area with one double bed at an upper level and a well appointed galley kitchen, dining area and shower-room at a lower level. Facilities include electric oven, gas hob and fridge (with freezer tray).
Although there’s no washing machine, the owners will do washing and/or tumble drying on request at no extra charge; an iron and board can be borrowed. Outside, there is a private sitting and BBQ area with magnificent views out to sea.
An arrival pack of basics (tea, bread etc.) can be arranged directly with the owners at cost from the local shop.
Free WiFi is available in the Palheiro cottage.
40 minutes drive from the airport at Santa Cruz, Palheiro is in the best village to stay in on the island, Fajã Grande. Halfway along the west coast of Flores, it is an ideal base to explore the island and has a unique sense of tranquillity and isolation. See below for more information on Flores island.
