Overview
Located on the Rua dos Mercadores, one of Ponta Delgada’s oldest commercial streets, the Nine Dots Azorean Art Boutique Hotel occupies two carefully restored buildings whose origins date back to the 16th century.
A seven-year restoration, completed in 2024, has preserved the character of both buildings, whilst introducing a calm, contemporary style which feels intrinsically connected to the old town quarter of the Azorean capital. The hotel’s striking stone staircases, archways and shaded courtyard preserve the character of the original buildings – lasting reminders of the craftsmanship which helped to shape Ponta Delgada’s mercantile architecture. Even the historic garden has been carefully preserved, with its mature camellia tree continuing to flourish after being protected throughout the restoration.
The ‘Nine Dots’ name is inspired by the nine islands of the Azores, and the wider archipelago is reflected in the hotel’s themed décor, with works by Azorean artists, handcrafted ceramics, native timber and local volcanic stone throughout. The feel continues through to the thirty-six guest rooms. The same understated approach, combining natural materials with subtle decorative references to the Azores, with soft tones, comfortable furnishings, and locally inspired artworks creating a peaceful atmosphere. The wellness area, sauna and indoor pool are also a particular highlight, tucked beneath beautifully restored vaulted arches, and the in-house Etc. Osteria restaurant has an Italian-inspired menu which showcases the island’s local produce.
