Beautifully located just on the outskirts of Piedade, 5 minutes walk from the pretty harbour ‘Porto do Calhau’, L’Escale de l’Atlantic is an artistic retreat run by a friendly Swiss couple who settled on Pico in 1989.
The rooms all have their own individual style with lots of pretty stencilling, sea shells and mosaics. In fact, the beautiful 2500m² garden is a treasure trove of artefacts where even the lava stone get special mosaic decoration and terracotta pots have gargoyle faces. 5 of the rooms share a terrace (while the fort is in a separate building 50m from the others) and meals are at one large dining table so be prepared to be sociable. French evening meals at L’Escale de l’Atlantic are legendary and are available on request (but not every night). All meals are prepared using either local or home grown produce. This is definitely a place to relax and unwind. Don’t miss watching the sun set over São Jorge swinging in a hammock on the terrace.
There are 6 rooms at L’Escale de l’Atlantic, all ensuite with a shower and toilet and all with sea view towards São Jorge. 5 of the rooms are in one long building with a pretty shared veranda out front, while the final room is in its own building (the fort) set apart. Décor is nautical, artistic and very warm and varies from room to room.
The breakfast and dining room overlook the ocean and there is a separate guest area with WiFi access, board games and books and there are also tea and coffee making facilities and an honesty bar. The village centre is 15 minutes walk away from L’Escale de l’Atlantic, a natural sea swimming pool is 5 minutes walk away and packed lunches are available on request.
