Overview
Casa Portuguesa is the only building in the Azores designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Raul Lino.
Constructed in 1924, the casa reflects Lino’s vision of an idealised Portuguese architectural style. His most celebrated works are on the mainland – Casa de Santa Maria in Cascais, the Teatro Tivoli in Lisbon, and Casa dos Penedos in Sintra all demonstrated that urban architecture can improve the lives of those who engage with it, by drawing on traditional forms which sit in quiet harmony with their natural surroundings.
Despite its central location, Casa Portuguese feels pleasantly removed from the pace of the capital Ponta Delgada. Overlooking the Jardim Antero de Quental, it’s vine-covered facade, well-tended gardens, and outdoor pool help to create a calm and considered retreat which is still within easy walking distance of the Portas da Cidade, the Mercado da Graca, and the marina at Portas do Mar.
The casa has a very relaxed and informal atmosphere, with shared spaces which encourage guests to socialise. There are just nine ensuite guest rooms in total: three standard, three deluxe, two superiors, and one studio. In keeping with Lino’s original aesthetic, the décor is comfortable and homely, and most rooms have a balcony overlooking the gardens. Mornings begin with a breakfast of fresh, local produce, and picnic baskets can be prepared for your days spent exploring the island. Dinner isn’t offered, but many of Sao Miguel’s best restaurants are a never more than a short walk away.
