On 17th September, Pedro Madruga (one of our skippers) encountered a large group of spotted dolphins, more than 200 individuals, 3 miles south of Pico. He described the group as “very interactive” and probably a new group as he wasn’t able to identify any of the individuals and because the behaviour of the dolphins was very “naive”… they had probably never met any homo sapiens turistus disturbis before!
Up till this point, it was nothing more than a very good encounter but suddenly a small white shadow appeared to the left of the boat… from the shadow surfaced a rare white dolphin.

This summer we started working with a non profit organisation in Santa Maria on Sal island, working to protect nesting loggerhead turtles and their habitats. Juan Blanco and Jacquie Cozens began walking the beaches to count nests and deter turtle killers in 2007 and also started a turtle hatchery to protect the eggs. In order to raise money for their project, they offer visitors the opportunity to get involved from June to November in a wide range of activities all of which can be booked through Archipelago Cape Verde :

• Early morning walks to look for tracks and nests
• Hatchery visits with a ranger
• Birth of baby turtles : from mid August nests in the hatchery will be opened so visitors can see the turtles being born
