Why not break up or extend your trip to the Azores with a stopover in Lisbon?  This colourful city is located on the Atlantic coast approximately 300km from the Algarve and has lots to offer, providing a fascinating introduction to Portuguese life.

Baixa – This district is still the commercial hub of the capital, housing banks, offices and shops.  At its heart, Rossio square is a popular meeting point with cafes, theatres and restaurants.

Bairro Alto – Laid out in a grid pattern in the late 16th century, the hilltop Bairro Alto is one of the most picturesque districts of the city.  Today, it retains a traditional way of life, with small workshops and family run restaurants.

Alfama – Crowned by the imposing hilltop Castelo of Sao Jorge, this area is receiving some long overdue restoration.  Take a walk around the maze of winding alleyways and take in the panoramic views from the shady terraces.
