Overview

Casal do Vulcao is a unique collection of rural farmhouses, born out of ruins the infamous Capelinhos volcanic eruption.

Perfect for couples and families, these characterful casas embody the style and spirit of traditional Azorean architecture, with their imposing basalt walls, their exposed cedar beams, floors and furnishing – all helping to create a cosy, homely atmosphere.

There are four casas in total. The Mainhouse has two twin bedrooms with a shared bathroom, a well-equipped kitchen and a comfortable living room. Atafona has three bedrooms (one double and two twins), two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room/diner. Palheiro is divided into two, one bedroom-apartments, each with a living room, bathroom and kitchenette, and finally the old Carro de Bois barn which also has a double bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette.

Outside, the shared grounds of Casal do Vulcao include a spacious garden, an outdoor pool, a kids play area and a communal BBQ, where guests often gather in the evenings to share a bottle of Azorean wine. It’s a short, ten-minute walk to Capelinhos – a striking volcanic landscape, created by a devastating year-long eruption in the late 1950s. We also recommend including a hire during your stay, and the main harbour town of Horta is a thirty-minute drive away.
